Where are the markets (industries and/or businesses if B2B) for your products and how important are local customers for what you produce?

The U.S. is Multi-Tek, Inc.'s largest market. We also currently export to China, Puerto Rico, the Philippines, Malaysia, and Canada among others. The High Tech industry is currently our largest target market which makes our Northwest location advantageous. We also produce complex cable assemblies and control panels used for marine, aerospace, and military applications. Our newest target market is marketing simple cable assemblies for household electronic needs. Multi-Tek, Inc has the ability to both design and manufacture most all types of cable assemblies used for electronic testing and data transmitting.

What does your company do to differentiate itself and its products from those of its competitors?

Multi-Tek, Inc. is not your average cable house. Quality sets us apart from our competitors. First, we are ISO 9001:2000 certified and are currently undergoing a company wide Continuous Improvement Plan with MTAPP (Manufacturing Technical Assistance Production Program) sponsored by the US Navy. We test each and every cable before it leaves our facility. Secondly, our flexibility allows us to offer quick turns to meet the rapidly changing demands in this industry for our customers. And finally, we offer input on product design to help in cost reduction and functionality.

How has your business changed in the last 5 years (if it is even 5 years old)?

Over the last five years, Multi-Tek, Inc. has developed an in-house software application that allows us to design, track, test, and confirm all manufacturing steps and procedures from purchasing to shipping. This enables us to evaluate our Lean Manufacturing procedures for continuous improvement.

The last two years?

Recently, Multi-Tek, Inc. has been developing and operating an on-line cable store marketed to household and personal electronic needs. We also have gone through the process to certify us as a woman-owned minority small business.

Key innovations in your company (products, processes, designs, ideas)?

Key innovations in Multi-Tek, Inc. would consist of our Cable Tracker data base. Most of the products we manufacture are custom designed by our customers, however, we do have the capability to assist them with functionality.

Key breakthrough or turning point in the business:

Currently, Multi-Tek, Inc. is experiencing it's biggest breakthrough with our investments in leading edge technology and assistance from MTAPP which we believe will widen our market into other industries.

What's the biggest challenge facing your business?

Being that the electronic industry is our largest market, we are often subject to the ever changing cycles of this industry. We are now more aggressively seeking to develop our other markets in aerospace and military contracts to counteract this cycle. We are very excited about the future potential of our company.

Can you describe how metro Portland works as a base from which to compete?

The Portland area is well suited for a cable assembly manufacturer. We are situated in an electronics industry hub and we can provide a faster-to-market product versus the foreign manufacturers. Local companies are often finding that the amount of savings in shipping and time to market are well worth it. Combine that with the superior quality and we become very marketable in the local marketplace.
